The Iran elections

Lots and lots of peeps on top of this, just want to point out a few highlights:

- @persiankiwi (Twitter)  is a young Iranian student living in Tehran, trying to keep the rest of the world updated. They hop from proxy dial-up to dial-up, trying to stay connected and ahead of the Iranian government's blockage of most of the internet.
- @austinheap (Twitter) is out of San Fransico, and is keeping a list of viable proxies for Iranians to use. There is also something about DDoSing the Iranian government's servers, I'll let your conscious dictate whether you think that would be helpful or not.
- @StopAhmadi (Twitter) is a Mousavi supporter who has good, current news and occasionally horrible pictures of the beatings the Iranian police are dishing out to their own people.
- nov11110 has a lot of videos up on YouTube from Tehran. Everything's in Arabic.

Much like the Bangladesh protests from a couple of years ago, I find myself watching this very closely. All I can do is pass the information along, so that no-one I know can say they didn't know.

Question about fonts in posts

Is there a way to change the font for part of a post? Other than italic and bold, I mean. I'd love to be able to put some lines in Courier or some very computer looking font for one of my [info]no_true_par stories. Thanks!

New computer!

OK! Went out this morning and got the new computer. It's a Compaq Presario, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, AMD something or another, and Windows Vista Home Premium.

Since it's incredibly powerful and very quiet, I have named him Rude-Computer.

Still in the process of getting caught back up with links, file moving, etc. But I've got the music going, so it's all good. :-)

Some home internet access, YAY!

Well, I've got Dante-Laptop warming my lap up and hooked up to the DSL now, so at least I can feel more connected to the rest of the world.

Gods, Dell has terrible technical support

I've been in contact with these guys since SUNDAY. Here's what I just got.

Dear Jennifer Sigman,

Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you so far. The Windows XP CD has been dispatched now.

We have shipped CD on the following address.

(my home address)

You should receive the CD within next 3 to 5 business days, depending upon the availability of the part in stock. The case and dispatch number is:

Case #

Dispatch #

You can use the dispatch number for tracking the shipment by calling at ***.

I apologize I would not be able to send you the Drivers and Resource CD for your system as the system is End of Life and is no longer under shipping.
I bought this computer LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO! Yeesh!

However all the drivers are available at: www.support.dell.com

You can get all the drivers by going under drivers and downloads section and entering the system service tag.

Alternatively, you may also get in touch with the Expired warranty department for the driver links as the warranty on your system is expired.

It is a fee-based phone support by Dell?s Expired Warranty Support team and they can be reached at 1-888-261-1716.

So... 72+ hours and 4 emails to get just the operating system CD, which, with my luck, won't even be here until the middle of next week, considering the holiday. I really don't think my next computer will be a Dell...

Bit of an update

1) Working with Dell to get a restoration CD. Hopefully they'll cough one up without charging an arm and a leg (you'd be surprised).
2) The hard drive itself seems to be OK. I spent some money at Circuit City to buy a SATA to USB thing and have been able to pull data off with no problems.
3) Need to get ethernet card drivers for Dante-laptop, just so I have something to check email with at home.

Being without the computer is so weird...

Home computer died

He just froze up in the middle of copying something, and won't even load into Safe Mode half the time. I'm going to have to spend all weekend moving files, formatting, downloading updates, re-moving files, and re-installing everything.

I don't think I've lost anything important, but I won't know for sure until I slave the hard drive to the other computer and copy things over. At worst, I'll lose the R and T directories of music plus whatever music I had downloaded in the last couple of weeks and hadn't gone through yet, spreadsheets tracking my MP3s, some game saves, and my bookmarks. The writing is OK, thank all the gods.

I won't know more until later. I won't be much available until sometime Sunday, mostly likely, considering the sheer amount of Windows XP updates I'll have to download over DSL.

*sighs* *pets poor broken Sephiroth-computer and makes soothing noises to him*
